If you're a fan of the various River Cottage TV series then you'll know who John Wright is. He's the foraging expert who takes Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall into woods and onto beaches in search of tasty edibles.
The Forager's Calendar does what it says on the tin. It's a month-by-month guide to what's good to eat in our woodlands, meadows, fields and seashores. The second book is just as lovely if you want to know more about the plants and animals you see on your country walks. He's also written a book on the curious origins of many scientific names, another on unusual countryside features such as hollow-ways, ha-has, and strip lynchets, as well as answering many questions like 'What is a saltern?' and 'Why do trees form burrs?' He's also written a number of the River Cottage guide books on such things as mushrooms, home-brewing and edible seashore.
Whatever Wright writes, he writes right.
