The Hugging Tree (or is that trees?)

This is a tree (or trees) that I walk past most days. It's two oaks that have grown around each other and fused together. It's a process called inosculation.

But is it now one tree or two? 

Do they share a root cluster? 

Did they grow from two acorns from two different trees? 

So many questions ...
