The Cartoon Museum

London's Cartoon Museum is a truly wonderful place. I've been a fairly regular visitor over the years and it's never failed to surprise and delight by displaying work that spans the whole history of cartoon art from Rowlandson to 2000AD and everything in between.

When I first started visiting it was based in a back street very near to the British Museum and it was always an ocean of calm among the sea of tourists (plus it had a great shop where I could pick up art books). I was even invited to a private party there in 2009 to celebrate Viz Comic's 30th birthday. There were a few famous faces among the revellers and I got my copy of Chris Donald's excellent Rude Kids signed and doodled in by most of the Viz artists.
The museum has an extensive library of books and comics and features an ever-changing display of original art by such people as Ronald Searle, Willy Rushton, Bryan Talbot, Steve Bell, Roger Law, Arnold Roth, Martin Rowson, Gerald Scarfe, Posy Simmonds and Ralph Steadman to name just a few.

In 2019 the museum moved from Little Russell Street to new and better premises in Wells Street, Fitzrovia (just north of Oxford Street). Tragically, however, it had barely been open a few months before Covid struck and, like many small museums, it is now struggling to stay afloat. Which is why I say to you - go visit when you can! Or become a friend or patron or buy some of their merchandise here. And do check out their many online exhibitions and workshops here

I last went for a visit in 2021 with an old schoolfriend from Cornwall - Rick Phillips - and we had a great time. Plus we got in cheap! There are some benefits to being over 60.
