Egg Rolling at Easter

Egg rolling is a fun Easter tradition where competitors roll eggs along a route, aiming to get their egg the furthest without breaking it. The rolled eggs are said to be symbols of both new life and the rolled stone of the tomb where Jesus was laid to rest.

St Bride’s Church on Fleet Street hosts an annual egg roll after their dawn service on Easter Sunday The congregation roll hard-boiled eggs along the road outside the church, with the winner receiving an egg of the chocolate variety.
If you prefer to roll your eggs at a greener location, venture to Box Hill in Surrey. The National Trust location hosts egg rolling competitions twice daily at 11am and 3pm over the Easter long weekend. You can bring your own painted egg or head to an egg decorating station first.

Easter Monday is when you'll find one of the longest running Egg Rolling races taking place in Preston, Lancashire. Here are films from 1901 and, over a century later, in 2011. And it's still going strong.

Meanwhile, there will be other Egg Rolling events all over the UK this weekend and you might find one near you.
